Born in 1939 in Nagoya, Japan. Engaged in advanced studies in Institute of Viruses of Kyoto University after graduation from Chemistry Department of School of Technology. Studied abroad at University of California of America later and obtained doctor's degree there. Hold a post in Sokol Institute and Basel Institute for Immunology successively. Being a professor in Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1981. Won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1987 for his discovery of the genetic principle for generation of antibody diversity.
