Discovery of Helicobacter Pylori ---Breakthrough of Traditional Conception for Therapy of Chronic and Stubborn Diseases

What on earth does gastric ulcer result from? In early 1980s, both pressure and living style were considered to be the cause. Gastric ulcer was treated as a nail-biting chronic in the medical field of that time.
In 1982, Australian scholar Barry J. Marshall and Robin Warren discovered helicobacter pylori and proved that infection of helicobacter pylori would lead to gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. This achievement broke through the popular medical doctrine of that time and finally it helped the two scientists win the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine 2005 20 years later.
Board of Review of Nobel Prize judged that pioneering discovery of Mr. Marshall and Mr. Warren changed gastric ulcer ¨C the chronic into a curable disease by gastric acid secretion and antibiotics of short-term therapy.
Helicobacter pylori seem to love human beings especially and human beings are its unique natural hosts. It is estimated that nearly 50% of the human being's stomach in the world have helicobacter pylori; however, only a few of them would be infected to suffer from gastric ulcer.
After pronounce of their discovery, interrelated research the world over was done increasingly. Papers about helicobacter pylori were countless. Through research over human experiments, antibiotics therapy and epidemiology, helicobacter pylori became the focus in gastritis and gastric ulcer and scientists had a clearer realization of nosogenesis of helicobacter pylori day by day.
According to lots of statistics, over 90% of duodenal ulcer and 80% of gastric ulcer resulted from helicobacter pylori. Now, doctors can diagnose the infection by antibody experiments, endoscope check and breath test. The therapy of antibiotics is proved to be effective to gastric ulcer. The discovery of Mr. Marshall and Mr. Warren thoroughly changed people's understanding towards tummy bug and provided the chance for heal of gastric ulcer and did great contribution to the living quality.
Presently, scientists commit themselves to study the relation between helicobacter pylori and cancer of stomach and some lymph tumor. Gastric ulcer is infected by microorganism, which inspires scientists to do research in rheumatoid arthritis infected by microorganism. There is no definite conclusion about these researches, but Board of Review of Nobel Prize said, "Discovery of gastric ulcer makes people have a deep understanding of the relations among chronic infection, inflammation and cancer".
