57th Convention of Nobel Prize Winners Held in Lindau, Germany

The 57th Convention of Nobel Prize Winners was held in Lindau, Germany on July 1st. The Convention invited 17 Nobel Prize winners and 564 young scientists and PhDs from 64 countries for a week-long dialogue on the theme of physiology and medicine.
Beginning from 1951, every year Germany will hold the week-long Convention of Nobel Prize Winner at a beautiful town named Lindau by the Bodom Lake. Each year the theme is different, last year the theme was chemistry, while this year the theme was physiology and medicine.
This year the Convention invited 17 winners of Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine and Nobel Prize in chemistry, including the 2006 winner in physiology and medicine, only 47-year-old American professor Craig Mello, and the 1992 winner in physiology and medicine, a 87-year-old, Professor Edmond H. Fisher from George Washington University. It is interesting that his birthplace is Shanghai.
Among the young scientists and PhDs attending this convention, many of them are from Germany, the host country, and USA, followed by China and India, which reflects the strength of the emerging countries in scientific and technological human resources. For the first time, Bangladesh, Jordan, North Korea, and Syria sent representatives to attend this convention, for the organizer is concerned with the cultivation of young talents in the developing countries. Among the young scholars attending this convention 283 are female, and the chairperson of the Convention, countess Sonia Bernadotte appreciated it very much.
Lindau Convention of Nobel Prize Winners offers an opportunity of face-to-face communication with the scientific masters for the young scientists and students. So far 135 Nobel Prize winners and 25,000 young scientists have attended this convention. Many young scientists that attended this convention have become academic leaders in different countries.
China sent 31 young scientists and PhD students to participate into this convention. According to Han Jianguo, Director of International Cooperation Bureau, National Natural Science Foundation of China, the leader of the Chinese delegation, the "Sino-German Science Center" is responsible for selection and organization of the delegates, which is vigorously supported by the Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Science, and National Natural Science Foundation of China. According to Mr. Zhao Miaogen, deputy director of the Germany side of the "Sino-German Science Center", the foundation of the Convention has very high level comments on the scholars selected by China.
