On 10th December 1901 at the fifth anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Prize Foundation was established. Among the five prizes provided for in Alfred Nobel's will (1895), the Nobel Prize in Literature was intended for the person who, in the literary field, had produced "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction". The Laureate should be determined the Swedish Academy of Literature. How is the Laureate selected? Nomination for the Nobel Prize is not based any recognized or known principles or standards but the wishes and concepts of Alfred Nobel when he was alive. For over a hundred years, this prize in literature has been running in accordance with its own rules and practice. The Nobel Prize in Literature does not accept any candidates nominated by an organization or self recommendation. It has a strict rule on nomination and few are entitled to do so, including: members of the Swedish Academy of Literature and similar; literature professors and linguistic professors in university; winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature; Chairmen of state-level writers' associations. Process of nominations and selecton: Firstly, on September each year the Swedish Academy of Literature first mail the invitation letter to concerned organizations or individuals deemed qualified, who are required to submit their nomination letter and concerned information before February 1 the next year. Secondly, the Award Committee begins determination work: 1). Remove unqualified nomination letters to conclude a "long list" with 200 candidates; 2). Carry out first-round selection and remove under-standard literary works to conclude a "first-round list" with 15-20 candidates; 3). The Award Committee draws a "final-round list" with 5 candidates and submit it to the Swedish Academy of Literature. When in summer holiday, the final-round selection begins. All members of the Academy are required to read the literary works of the 5 candidates in this summer holiday together with the preparation for their recommendation report. In mid of September, all members are gathered for discussion, determination and voting. The Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature of the year is announced normally on the first Tuesday of October of that year or before October 15 as the minimum. The award ceremony for this prize will be held at Stockholm Concert Hall on December 10-"Nobel Day", and awarded by the King of Sweden. Steps of nomination and election Nomination: on September each year, the Swedish Academy of Literature sends the invitation letter to concerned organizations and individuals deemed qualified, who are required to feed back with their nomination letters and concerned information before February 1 the next year; Qualification determination: remove under-standard nomination letters and conclude a "long list" with about 200 candidates; First-round selection: remove those literary pieces under-standard in terms of literary value and conclude a "first-round list" with 15-20 candidates on April; Second-round selection: on May, conclude a ˇ°final-round listˇ± with 5 candidates and submit it to the Swedish Academy of Literature for approval. Final-round selection: from July, all members of the Swedish Academy of Literature read the literary works of the five candidates together with the preparation of their recommendation report, who are gathered to discussion, review and vote the final laureate. Laureate announcement: the Laureate winning the Nobel Prize in Literature of the year is announced normally on the first Thursday of October.
