  Amusing Remarks about Nobel Prize
Steven Chu ----Cool and Trap Atoms with Laser Light

2007-9-25

Steven Chu, the Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1997 was born in St. Louis, Missouri State, USA on February 28th, 1948. His parents were born in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, and went to USA in 1940s. The three sons of them were all outstanding, and Steven was their second son.
However, Steven was not at the best in his high school, while his brother always ranked No.1 in school. 'But, when I was in college,' said Steven, 'because I did not only learn from books, but also from other fields that I was interested with, I finally became an excellent student; and the name of my brother, however, was forgotten by others.' Steven, the latecomer, made a fast progress, and received his doctor's degree in physics in 1970. Steven went to Bell Laboratory as researcher in 1978, and became professor in Stanford University from the year of 1987.
At early time, Steven developed his own method to cool and trap atoms with laser light. It's just like the method of water spraying to stop a small moving ball, and make it suspending and seeable in air. This achievement enabled scientists to control matters in a previously unexplored field, which was a great contribution to the physical theory. But, Steven Chu worked with great effort for this achievement for over 20 years since he started his postdoctoral research in 1976.
When he was informed of the award of Nobel Prize, Steven felt extraordinarily calm. He said, 'I hope this award won't affect my research schedule; and I will go to the classroom as usual.'
His parents said, 'As parents of Nobel Laureate, we do feel happy; but what is most important, he won honor for all Chinese people. '
Winning honor for Chinese people is a common will of overseas Chinese, and also the source which generates union, power, juvenile and progress of Chinese nation.
On November 2nd, 1997, Chinese President Zemin Jiang who was visiting USA met Steven Chu in Los Angles. President Jiang invited Steven to go back to China frequently. Steven said he had been back for twice, and he would like to promote the scientific communication between the two countries.
On November 4th, 1997, Shanyan Xu, the secretary of China Association for Science and Technology met Steven Chu in Stanford University. Steven warmly welcomed the delegation in his office, and suggested them to raise more talents, and reward the hardworking researcher and people with scientific breakthrough to encourage them to make further progress.
We are looking forward to more and more Chinese people winning Nobel Prize in science, and make great contribution to the development of the scientific researches of human beings.
