Funny Story about Nobel Laureates

2007-9-17
What researched by many Nobel Laureates are usually subjects hard to understand. However, some laureates since 1901 really had some funny stories. The youngest Nobel Laureate in history was William Lawrence Bragg who was awarded the prize in recognition of the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays when he was 25 years old. And there were some oldest Nobel Laureates in history who won Nobel Prize when they were 87 years old. They were: Russian physical scientist Vitaly L. Ginzburg who was awarded the prize in 2003 in recognition of his contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids; American scientist Raymond Davis Jr. who was awarded the prize in 2002 for his pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos; and the laureates of the Nobel Prize in physiology or Medicine in 1966 and 1973, and Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 were also 87 years old. While Nobel Prize is far and untouchable for most people, some outstanding scientists not only made the dream come true, but also made it twice. Marie Courier was respectively awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911; American physical scientist John Bardeen was respectively awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 and 1972; and Linus Carl Pauling was respectively awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. And, there were father and son laureates, and husband and wife laureates who won Nobel Prize at the same time or early or late: Sir William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg who jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915; Niels Henrik David Bohr and Aage Niels Bohr who respectively won the Nobel Prizes in Physics 1922 and 1975; Hans Karl August Simon von Euler-Chelpin and Ulf von Euler who respectively won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1929 and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1970; besides, Joseph John Thomson and George Paget Thomson who respectively won the Nobel Prizes in Physics 1906 and 1937; and Karl Manne Georg Siegbahn and Kai M. Siegbahn who respectively won the Nobel Prizes in Physics 1924 and 1981. The story of Mr. and Mrs. Courier who jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 was well-known; Their daughter, Irene Joliot-Curie, inheriting the gene of Mr. and Mrs. Courier, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 together with her husband Frederic Joliot.
